All About Mr. Blackburn
My name is Monte Blackburn and I have been teaching elementary school for 24 years. My wife and I have 4 children, and all of them went to Dayton Grade School. We love the country life. We love reading, hiking, playing games, camping, and going on trips together.
I love the exhilaration of climbing mountains. When I was 10 years old, I tried climbing 12,280 ft Mt. Adams in the Cascade Range with my dad and brothers. I got too tired that time, so I didn't make it. I tried it again in 2013, but my gear didn't work right, so I didn't make it. Two summers ago, I finally made it to the top. It was one of the most exciting things I've ever done. I loved it so much that I did it again just last summer. Accomplishing such a feat is much like learning. The process is tough and sometimes slow, but the rewards are rich and varied. I try to instill that thought of perseverance into my teaching.
I love teaching! I learned that I loved it while I lived in Korea for two years when I was 19 years old. I was there as a missionary for my church. It was there that I caught the passion for helping others learn, especially kids. I have loved it ever since. My mother was also instrumental in developing that love of teaching. She taught publicly for many years, but her most important teaching occurred in the home. My 7th Grade Art teacher, Mrs. Erma Patterson, was also someone who taught me how to teach. She did it by example. She taught with love and compassion.
